Dr. Stahl serves as editor-in-chiefof CNS Spectrums. Author of over 500 articles and chapters, and more than 1600 scientific presentations andabstracts, Dr. Stahl is an internationally recognized clinician, researcher andteacher in psychiatry with subspecialty expertise in psychopharmacology. Dr. Stahl has written 39 textbooks and edited 13 others, including the best-selling and award winning textbook, Stahl’s EssentialPsychopharmacology, now in its fourth edition and the best selling andaward winning clinical manual, Essential Psychopharmacology Prescriber’s Guide, now in its fifth edition. Dr. Stahl has also published a novel, Shell Shock, a thriller that recounts the history of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Dr.Stahl is Senior Academic Advisor and Director of Psychopharmacology for theCalifornia Department of State Hospitals (DSH) where he has a leadership rolein addressing violence in the five-hospital 6500 patient DSH. He has been awarded the International Collegeof Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) Lundbeck Foundation Award in Education forhis contributions to postgraduate education in psychiatry and neurology. His books have won the British MedicalAssociation’s Book of the Year Award and recently, first prize for best digitalmedical book. Dr. Stahl is also the winner of the A.E. Bennett Award of theSociety of Biological Psychiatry, the APA/San Diego Psychiatric SocietyEducation Award, the UCSD Psychiatry Residency Teaching Award, and has beencited as both one of “America’s Top Psychiatrists” and one of the “Best Doctorsin America.” He was honored with theDistinguished Psychiatrist Award of the APA and gave the DistinguishedPsychiatrist Lecturer for 2013. He wasnamed the 2016 David Mrazek Award Winner of the American PsychiatricAssociation and gave the Mrazek Pharmacogenomics Memorial Lecture at the 2016APA meeting. His alma mater Northwestern University honored him by naming theaward for the most promising medical student to go into psychiatry the “StephenStahl Award.” In 2018 he was awarded anHonorary Doctorate of Science by Uskudar University in Istanbul Turkey for hislifetime of achievements in psychiatry.
