Prof. Krzysztof Simon, MD, Ph.D

Professor Krzysztof Simon, MD, PhD, was born in Wrocław in 1952. He started the studies on the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Wrocław in 1971 and completed in 1977 with the diploma of doctor of medicine with distinction. During his studies he was actively involved in activities of the Polish Students' Association (ZSP) and the Socialist Union of Polish Students (SZSP) and the scientific circle at the Department of Infectious Diseases of Children.
During his studies, he participated in medical student internships in:
  • Wittington Hospital, London – 1974
  • Medical University of Szeged, Hungary – 1975
  • Hospital General de Asturias, Oviedo, Spain –1976
In 1980, he obtained the first-degree specialization in internal medicine. In 1984, he obtained the second-degree specialization in internal medicine, whereas in 1985 (Medical University of Wrocław) he received the title of a doctor of medical sciences for the dissertation: "Assessment of acylase activity activated with cobalt in experimental carcinogenesis in rats". In 1988, he received a certificate in gastrointestinal endoscopy, and in 1993 the second-degree specialization in infectious diseases. In 1993, he received a post-doctoral degree in medical sciences (Medical University of Wrocław) for achievements and the dissertation entitled: "Studies on the effects of colchicine in the course of experimental chronic liver damage in Buffalo rats". In 2004, he received the title of a professor of medical sciences.
Professional career:
  • 1977–1979 – trainee assistant and assistant at the Department of Radiology of the Medical University of Wrocław
  • 1979–1993 – assistant, senior assistant, assistant professor at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Medical University of Wrocław
  • 1980–1989 – senior emergency physician at the Department of Cardiology of the Medical University of Wrocław
  • 1993–2000 – doctor habilitatus (with post-doctoral degree) Department of Infectious Diseases, Liver Diseases and Acquired I Immunodeficiency of the Medical University of Wrocław
  • 2000–2004 – associate professor Department of Infectious Diseases, Liver Diseases and Acquired I Immunodeficiency of the Medical University of Wrocław

He has been awarded many times for his scientific and teaching achievements: awards of the Minister of Health, I J.Kostrzewski Scientific Award, many individual and team awards of the Rector of the Medical University of Wrocław of the first and second degrees, Special Award of the Rector of the Medical University for scientific work with the highest Impact Factor published in the English-language medical journal (Lancet), Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Gold Cross of Merit, Honorary Medal of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine, Honorary Medal of the Polish Society of Family Medicine, Honorary Medal of the Tenth Anniversary of the Gromkowski Regional Specialist Hospital in Wrocław.
